Microsoft Buys Skype – Just for 8.5 BILLION :)

Microsoft dropped the hammer to the tune of 8 and 1/2 BILLION dollars on May 10th to purchase Skype, going down on record as the largest purchase in the history of the company. According to Microsoft’s press release, Skype has 170 million users and had over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010.

It’s quite clear that Microsoft, and their partner Facebook will be making use of Skype in the near future on many different platforms. And, keeping Skype out of Google’s toy box is icing on the cake for Bing and Facebook. While this may not have a direct impact on Search Engine Marketing, it’s going to certainly be a big deal at Microsoft and likely Bing as well.
