Google is updating the way their Top Search Queries data is calculated in Webmaster Tools. Previously it was an average of all the spots you would rank for. For example, if you have a site about tents and a person does a search for tents where your site appears in position 3, 6, and 12. Then another user searches for tents and your site shows up for them in position 5 and 9, Google would average those to give you an Average Position of 7.

The change is that Google will take the top ranked position from each query your site showed up for and average those to get your site’s rank in those queries. With the new update, Google would only take the highest ranking from each of those queries. So the 3 from the first query and the 5 from the second query would average at 4. Google thinks this will match your expectations about how the site position ranking should be reported.

All of your site’s historical data from before this update (which came into play on January 25th) will not be affected by this update, only new information.

Facebook is set to go public sometime in May, as a publicly traded company that is. Currently the company is raising its IPO or Initial Public Offering of $5 billion dollars with the help of several big named banks. The IPO is essentially a piece of the company that Facebook is willing to put out and sell to investors for a large chunk of money to use on growing its business, or maybe just making its current investors even richer than they already are.

The IPO is usually based on the value of the company along with other factors decided by the company and the banks involved. While no one can really say how much Facebook is actually worth, many estimates range from 80 to 100 billion dollars. This would mean that the $5 billion IPO is actually a pretty small number, and many thought it would be closer to $10 billion. However Facebook is playing it safe and being conservative, which will only help.

If you’re looking forward to buying Facebook shares be prepared to wait a long time. The banks that supply the money for that IPO give their clients the first access to the shares, and usually those first few in the 1% take up 90% of those shares (take a number 99%).

Google Search Plus Your World has been live since the beginning of 2012 and the take on it is mixed at best. From my regular SEO reads, I found out that Google seems to have they taken a step too far to potentially monetize YOUR social/search information? Is Google trying to control our lives just like what Facebook is doing?

If you haven’t read about (SPYW), Spying your world, I mean Search Plus your World rolling out early of the year, here it is – http://www.searchenginenews.com/se-news/update/C580#4754

Ok so many people just don’t care if their friend or mom just bought a certain type of phone or +1′d a link about something. There is also the added negative pressure that many experts are very against personalized results.

Here’s yet another fantastic TED talk on what personalizing search results and popular news sites is doing to us as a society. The video is about 12 minutes long and is worth the time to watch…

Has Google gone too far and lost touch with the 99%? That is just one of the many questions we’ll have to continue to ask about Google’s future.

From a marketing and AdWords perspective, Google’s Search Plus Your World is a theoretical gold mine that will allow Google to target ads that use all their information about you. One advantage they have over Facebook is that they’ll have all the same information, but they’ll also be able to utilize all your search data as well. This is especially true since Google+ is already so heavily integrated into all of Google’s products.

Some examples of the power potentially available to Google would be using your +1′s as an advertising tool for companies. For example if you +1′d an article or a product like a an iPod Touch and then your friend searches for mp3 players, your +1 might show up in their results saying you liked the iPod Touch. Then Apple could put ad space right in that result giving your friend 10% off an iPod for clicking that ad. At the very least, there could be a link to their site about the product.

More examples include sponsored “Google+ recommendations” in the results or enhanced sitelinks ads that include hangouts to put you directly in touch with a sales person or a video about the product. Needless to say, if Google is bold enough, the possibilities are nearly limitless.

A website can have every single functionality a person can think of. Most companies have websites that they think is the best for their industry. They constantly try to outshine their competitors in any way they can and having a website that is appealing enough for prospective customers to visit is one method of doing it. However, if a company doesn’t apply search engine optimization in their website, then their aim to be better than their competitors remains inadequate.

Search Engine Optimization is important because this makes your online presence known. If you intend to have your website rank in search engines, it is best to hire a good Middle Eastern search engine optimization firm.

Hiring a Middle Eastern search engine optimization firm is a good idea because they have cheaper rates and can do a better job than most western SEO companies. They also have experiences in ranking other websites in search engines and are known to keep up with their clients’ business expectations.

Middle Eastern search engine optimization firms can keep your business website in top shape and will apply various strategies in having your site gain traffic. A good Middle Eastern search engine optimization firm is up to date with current tactics in increasing a website’s ranking for certain keywords and give you advice on what you should do to be better than your competitors.

Some people think SEO is easy and can be done by an average person. But that’s where they are wrong. SEO is done by people with years of experience, who have analyzed ways on increasing a website’s position in top search engines. These professionals can also help draw people belonging in your target market to visit your website. Once you see the results of how a professional SEO Specialist works, that’s when you would know and understand the importance of getting Middle Eastern search engine optimization firm and that it is all worth it.

Here’s a Google video with no real content but it does have a cartoon-cute way of saying ‘mobile is important’.

Efficient Frontier and Macquarie Capital have released a report which makes the prediction that mobile search will make up 22% of search revenue by the end of 2012. As of right now, there is a suggested pattern that mobile search has and will continue growing 300% each year with no reason in to slow down.

Okay – mobile is important, you understand that and now you’ve got the numbers (and clever graph) above to support that statement.

Well, not surprisingly, Google is taking the initiative to get their hands into the mobile game with the release of GoMo. Short for Go Mobile, the howtogomo.com site created by Google has several features to help you create a site for mobile devices.

Mobile View – shows you what your site will look like on a mobile device, and then gives you a customized report on how to improve your site.

Mobile Info – shows you why mobile sites matter and mobile trends

Great Examples – shows you sites that are using good mobile site practices, and a list of best mobile site practices.

Find a Mobile Site Dev – shows you a list of mobile site developers who can help you develop a mobile site.

As you can see from this list – there are some cool features to tap into. Great examples and the ability to see any site in different mobile browsers is a plus.

So 2011 is over and out, and we’re looking forward to another year in search. At the beginning of 2011 Google was a very different place. Search looked different, there was no site preview feature, we were still using Buzz because there was no Google+, and Google had just attempted to buy Groupon for a couple billion dollars before deciding to just create their own version.

For a great overview of search in 2011, Google’s Zeitgeist has compiled several top 10 lists from 2011, the most prominent of which is the fastest growing global search trends of 2011, meant to capture the spirit of 2011 in search form.

The list is as follows:

10. iPad2

9. Steve Jobs

8. The Japanese nuclear powerplant crisis as a result of the tsunami.

7. Adele

6. iPhone 5

5. Battlefield 3

4. Casey Anthony

3. Ryan Dunn

2. Google+

1. Rebecca Black

We’re not sure if this list is supposed to be interesting, exciting, or depressing. At a glance it’s a semi-nostalgic overview that reminds us of all the ups, downs, and whatever random horrible fad (think the Macarena and Rebecca Black) was of the last year. After some consideration however, the list shows us that minor celebrities, electronics, video games, and social networking are very high priorities in the search universe, and of course our society.

For example, the death of a visionary like Steve Jobs is only ranked at #9 on the list, but a minor celebrity like Ryan Dunn, a guy from the Jackass show and movies (who put a toy car in his anus so he could get an x-ray of it) is #3, and where is the ‘death of Osama Bin Laden’, or Kim Jung Il?

While we can appreciate that people searched so much for information about the tsunami and the nuclear power plant that was heavily damaged in the disaster, but what about the revolution in Egypt? Or perhaps the people from nearby countries that were inspired by the Egyptian revolution to start their own like Libya? These are global trends aren’t they?

We only have one answer to all those questions: Rebecca Black. Think about it (please don’t). Of course none of this is Google’s fault, and the graphs and information are all pretty cool, so check them out!

Google announced in early December via Twitter that Panda Updates will resume in 2012. Panda has released six updates since Google first introduced it in February 2011. With the next update being released sometime in January 2012 you should giving some attention to the following three areas when performing regular maintenance on a Web site to ensure the Web site ranks well on Google.

Keyword Density
Panda has been coming down heavy on duplicate content, poorly constructed language, and intense keyword density to penalize sites that use too many keywords to try to increase their site rankings. Maintaining a keyword density ratio of 5% to 8% is a safe range to avoid being considered spam by Google or your users. Remember that creating original, unique, quality content is the most important.

Relevancy of Keywords
Keep an eye on the relevancy of your keywords and phrases. Sharing keywords and phrases with sites that tend to abuse those words and phrases for rank can be detrimental to your site. Watch the domain authority score for those keywords and phrases, and do a search to see what kind of sites are using them along side you.

Fix Broken Links
Check all links and make sure that the URLs still exist. If you find some that are no longer working, fix them or remove the links so that Google will not think that you are intentionally trying to abuse the search algorithm. Broken links give Google the impression you’re just a link farm.

Agatha is a content writer who enjoys blogging and digital scrapbooking. Her current project is about Web Hosting companies and some great offers from them.

====================================================

The CPanel is a control area or account manager offered by web hosting providers.

What exactly is it?

CPanel (short for Control Panel) is really what its name implies – it is a control panel that makes things easier, especially for non-techies and newbies, to manage their website. Its user-friendly panel makes it a very popular service.

It offers simple scripts to enable users to make additions of applications to the domain name easier and more quickly. The common applications used are Drupal and WordPress. CPanel offers options for installing a photo gallery, a forum, Wiki software and many more.

In a nutshell, it makes the process of getting a web site up and running easier, has a start up wizard so that even newbies can do it easily step by step. It supports e-mails and runs many applications automatically so you do not have to set everything up manually.

It also has tutorials explained in length when you need further assistance.

What are its common functions?

It is like an account manager or a dashboard – easy to use and refer to multiple tasks in your domain name.

You can create e-mail accounts associated with the domain name.

It is so easy to access all your files from the host server.

Add sub-programs to your current main program.

Upload files without extra cost.

If you are looking for a reliable host, make sure to read about reviews from actual consumers, like the Hostgator.com Review written by actual users of the service.

Since its inception in the late 1800s, the slot machine has consistently been one of the most popular games at casinos – both for the casino owners and players alike. The casino owners like the fact that they were designed to return only 80-90 percent of the players’ money, while the players enjoy the machine’s accessibility, its entertainment value, and the potential to win BIG. However, more recently, a new trend has emerged: slot tournaments, which allow players to still experience the fun of the game while limiting their expenditure (potentially to zero!).

Online or Offline:

The most basic division in slot tournaments comes from whether it is in a physical casino or online. In a physical casino, after registering for a tournament, you are assigned a specific machine and time to play. Then you are given a set amount of credits to play with and an amount of time to use them. The winner is determined by the person with the highest amount of winnings at the end. Although online slot tournaments are very similar because you don’t need physical slot machines, so more people are generally able to participate.

“Freeroll” or Fee:

Also, online slot tournaments, at least, may be further divided into two categories: “freeroll” tournaments, and fee tournaments. In the second of these, fee tournaments, each player pays a small entry fee upon registration that is pooled and then divided up into the prizes for the winners. These tournaments may either follow the formula described in the previous paragraph, or follow the “Sit’n'Go” method of online poker. In this method there is no specific start time, and instead, the tournament starts when all the seats are filled. This type of tournament is particularly effective online because so many players are able to participate that the fee can be as little as $1 while still maintaining a temptingly large prize.

Unsurprisingly, the “freeroll” tournaments are the most popular because they offer cash prizes. This means that, without risking anything, the participants stand to gain what can often be a great deal of money. However, because freeroll tournaments are such a good deal, they fill up extremely quickly. So, if you want to register for one, it’s best to do so as far in advance as possible.

From all this, it should be clear that, whether you are paying for the tournament or not, online slot tournaments are a fantastic opportunity for slot lovers and free money seekers alike.

It seems that Facebook has been forced to turn off cruise control and start to roll out updates to users. These new features have to be in response to Google+ and it’s something to be expected. What is also becoming the norm is the apparent outrage by Facebook users about these changes. If you’re a Facebook user, then you know what we mean. Now’s the time when your friends will start saying “I don’t like the new Facebook!” over and over, and they can rejoin the “Change Facebook back to the way it was” groups that were created years ago. You know it’s true!

Let’s get down to the details of what’s new with Facebook. We feel that they’ve released some top notch features that will quiet down the complainers once they realize it’s better than what they were using before, or they just forget what they are complaining about in a few days because they are too busy using Facebook.

First off, Facebook has released a new Subscribe feature that allows users to subscribe to others in a similar fashion as Twitter and Google+ in that you don’t actually have to be friends with that person to subscribe to them.

Now before you get all excited and anxious about the privacy concerns, Facebook is on top of it. First, you have to choose if you want to allow people to subscribe to you at all. So, if you do nothing then nothing changes. Second, if you allow people to subscribe to you, you can control what content they see – down to an individual basis. This also means you can choose only photos, comments, likes etc. to be seen. You can also divide people up into groups much like Google+’s Circles feature.

These new groups are called Smart Lists – another new addition. These groups can divide your friends into several categories like friends you attended school with, friends you work with, and friends that live nearby.

In combination with another feature called Friends list (which is essentially the G+ Circles feature) letting you divide your friends into Restricted, Acquaintances, and Close Friends, you now have complete control of the content you see and send on Facebook. See, they’ve seriously taken a page from Google’s playbook and are picking out some of the very best things about G+

Your Close Friends will pop up more often and show more content, and your Acquaintances might not show up at all. Add in the Smart List criteria to that and things get pretty specific.

The same goes for the Subscribe button. Not only do users get to choose what subscribers see, the subscriber can choose what kind of information they want to see as well.

The next big feature for Facebook is going to be the Timeline. The Timeline is essentially a visual history and highlight of a person’s past. If you or someone you know (just admit it’s you) is one of those people that posts every moment of their life on Facebook, then you can use Timeline to help map your life for you and your friends. It will even let you browse by year or dates, letting people with the proper permission to see how you’ve progressed through life via pictures, video and more.

Next, Facebook is working on media integration into their new ticker feature. The ticker is essentially a live feed that gives you updates on real-time information as it’s happening. It is less detailed than the normal feed, but updates constantly. The media integration into the ticker will show you when a user is listening, watching, reading or eating something right now. It will then connect you to that event in a unique way like allowing you to listen to the same thing or perhaps even watch the same thing on Netflix. This is a pretty neat idea, but it’s all starting to get a slightly obsessed feeling.

This is where we want to take a minute, stand up on our soapbox and loudly say…

This is essentially an online recording of the life of your children, wife, friends, yourself and everyone else that participates in Facebook or any of these online social sites! It will be (a sometimes) messy recording of achievements as well as disappointments.

Not only will potential bosses, colleges, girlfriends and in-laws be reviewing it – but future generations as well. When you remove a post, picture, video or anything else from Facebook, it’s only put where you can’t see it. Facebook keeps a copy. In how many generations do you think it will be legal to release this information?

Remember that the Twitter archives went into the Library of Congress! Your children’s children will be learning about their family through the digital records that we are recording right now! Stress this to colleges, your kids and your friends. By all means have fun on Facebook – just do it with your eyes wide open
